Things to do

HISTORY
Umbria is also known as the ‘land of the saints’. The region’s most famous religious landmark is the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. This popular spot is worth a visit to see the stunning frescos by Giotto. But, there are many quiet historic sites to visit, too. Perugia, the capital city, retains the feel of a quaint hilltop town, with plenty of winding medieval streets, grand palaces and fascinating museums to discover.

NATURE
Those in search of the Umbria’s wild side will love Mount Sibbini National Park. Hike through a striking landscape of mountains, forests and steep, glacier-carved valleys. But the region also has a gentler beauty. Plan a day out on the shores of Lake Trasimeno to discover rolling hills peppered with medieval hamlets, vineyards and silvery olive groves.

FOOD & DRINK
You’re sure to eat well on a luxury break in Umbria. This fertile region specialises in wholesome, rustic fare, with plenty of fragrant, roasted meat dishes and traditional lentil broths. Truffles feature in many dishes – with white truffles a particular delicacy. Look out for guided tours along the ‘wine trail’ to taste Umbria’s fine, dry white wines.

Top Tip from SLH

For an active day out, visit Marmore’s Falls – a Roman-built cascading waterfall, surrounded by rivers that are wonderful spots for canoeing.
