Introducing Stoke Poges

It’s said that Thomas Gray’s ‘Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard’ was written about a resting place here in Stoke Poges. The village maintains the rural charm of the poem, while putting you within easy reach of the hustle and bustle of England’s South East.

Things to do

LANDMARKS
There has been a manor house in Stoke Poges since before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The current Manor House dates from Tudor times and has a grisly history – Charles I was prisoner here before his beheading in 1649.

SPORT
Stoke Park was originally home to Britain’s first Country Club, and a 27-hole championship golf course opened here in 1909. Tennis is also a key fixture, as the estate hosts the Boodles tennis championship each June as a warm up to Wimbledon.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
If the little ones are getting restless, why not encourage them to burn off some energy with a visit to Delta Force Paintball? Situated in Gerrards Cross, it’s easy to get to from Stoke Poges, and makes for an exhilarating day out.

Top Tip from SLH

If you’re a James Bond fan, visit the golf course at Stoke Park – it featured in Goldfinger. While the opening sequence of For Your Eyes Only was filmed in the graveyard at St Giles Church.
