Introducing Saint-Tropez

There are two sides to Saint-Tropez. Cruise-ship-sized yachts, designer boutiques and the movie-star good looks of a cosmopolitan beach resort. But look closer and you’ll also find whispers of a traditional fishing village with cobbled streets, pastel-hued houses and peaceful cafés, only walking distance from some of the best hotels in Saint Tropez. Whether you prefer to while away hours watching Pétanque on Place des Lices, or stretching out on Pampelonne Beach and channelling your inner Brigitte Bardott, Saint-Tropez is a sublime spot for a luxury break.

Things to do

ART & CULTURE
As well as fashionistas and film stars, Saint-Tropez has long fascinated the art world. The light of Provence has been a beacon for artists from Matisse to Marquet. In Musée de l’Annonciade look for works by Signac who, along with Georges Seurat, is said to have devised pointillism during his time in St. Tropez. Or uncover the next generation of artists in the contemporary warehouse galleries and workshops around the village.

BEACHES
Made famous in the 1950s, thanks to Brigitte Bardot’s star turn in And God Created Woman, Pampelonne Beach is a three-mile stretch of white sand that’s still the place to see and be seen. Stretch out on a sun lounger, grab a drink in a private beach club or indulge in one of the area’s many fine dining restaurants. For something a little quieter, make a beeline for the pretty Canadel Coves or Anse de Bonne Terrassee near Ramatuelle village.

HISTORY
For a flavour of Saint Tropez’s maritime heritage, head for the Citadel. Here you’ll find the Musee de l’Histoire Maritime that charts the area’s seafaring history. High on a hill, there are sweeping views to enjoy once you emerge. Afterwards, wander down through La Ponche to Vieux Port – the old quay – to see the traditional fish market that is still a local fixture.

Top Tip from SLH

When browsing the boutiques of Saint-Tropez, look out for ‘sandales tropéziennes’. Made locally from soft leather, these classic shoes are at the top of most visitors’ shopping lists.
