One of the first Spanish cities in Mexico, exploring Morelia’s centre feels like stepping back in time. As a regional cultural capital, Morelia has a busy calendar of special events. Visit during the international music festival to see choirs, chamber groups and orchestras. Ensembles from annual ‘guest nations’ have included the London Symphony Orchestra. If cinema is more your thing, there’s the international film festival to look forward to. FOOD
Flavour-packed and spicy, the cuisine in Morelia is a delicious force to be reckoned with. Specialities include traditional tamales made with fresh, rather than dried corn, topped with crema and salsa. If you like avocado, you’re in for a real treat.
