Its four mountain-view suites are furnished with butter-soft linens – and some feature hot tubs. Whip up a feast in the professional grade kitchen, or have a private chef grill your steaks for you while you soak in the sunset on the deck. After dinner you can enjoy some friendly rivalry at the indoor bowling alley and pool table, or cosy up by moonlight beside the outdoor firepit. A handful of luxury casitas offer the same 5* comforts – and equally spectacular from-the-deck views – for smaller groups or couples.

Away from the richly furnished lodge and casitas of the ranch, nature truly is the star of the Cougar Ridge show. The nearby town of Torrey has officially been awarded ‘Dark Sky Community’ status, so stargazing here is off the scale – and the ethereal Milky Way often makes an appearance. During the daytime, the dramatic Navajo Sandstone cliffs, domes and bridges of the National Park create endless ‘is this a movie set?’ moments.
