Introducing Buje

Tucked away on the edge of the Adriatic Sea, Buje is a destination to savour. Olive groves and vineyards are perfectly paired with vintage views and barrels of history.

Things to do

WINE
In Istria, all roads lead to vineyards, with its famed wine routes guiding visitors to the country’s leading producers such as Degrassi and Kozlovic. Tour historic cellars and try the product of the local vine, the Momjan Muscat, born of the unique blend of red and grey soil. Once you’ve had your fill - and perhaps bought a bottle or six – move on to sample the ‘liquid gold’ extra-virgin olive oil produced in the region.

HISTORY
Buje’s long history can be traced back to the Bronze age and through the Roman and Byzantine empires. Spend a day exploring its grand medieval ramparts and famed bell towers, and from the highest, witness a spectacular panorama taking in Slovenia and the Italian and Austrian alps. Bring your binoculars and on a clear day you can see as far as Venice. Within the old town walls there’s enough ancient churches and frescoes to satisfy any history buff.

FAMILY
Enjoy days out as a family cycling through the countryside across hills and trails, or explore the town and its amazing architecture on two wheels. Children will love nearby Istrialand - a fun-packed waterpark close by. And if the beach is calling then Buje is only a short drive to the pristine golden sands of Umag, where you can all relax by the famously blue shallows.

Top Tip from SLH

Istria is Croatia’s truffle capital - don’t leave Buje without sampling these earthy delicacies. There are plenty to choose from, but the black and white varieties are considered some of the best (and priciest) in the world.
