Introducing Brixen

Proudly wearing the badge of oldest town in the Dolomites, Brixen-Bressanone is much more than a gateway to ski country. This postcard-pretty Tyrolean town is an attractive tangle of avenues and arched buildings that circle the central Cathedral. That said, the sheer beauty of the mountains that make up Brixen’s backdrop is hard to beat.

Things to do

SKI
The nearby Plose gondola lift whisks you up to 2000m above sea level, for a sensational vantage point over the Puez Geisler peaks and nature reserve. This World Heritage landscape turns from hiking heaven in the warmer months to ski terrain in winter. Tackle South Tyrol’s longest slope, the Trametsch black run, or take the family on toboggans. There’s nothing quite like going downhill in the Dolomites.

EVENTS
Brixen’s ‘mountain marathon’ is an epic endurance test, drawing sportspeople and spectators to the town each summer. At the other end of the calendar, the beginning of Advent sees Cathedral Square laced with fairy lights for the Christmas market. With little huts circling the trimmed tree and the mountains just beyond, it’s an enchanting festive setting.

NATURE
While Brixen’s South Tyrolean position places it firmly on the snow sports map, spring and summer bring fresh opportunities for immersion in nature. The town becomes a base for forest walking trails, family-friendly downhill go-carting and gondola lifts up Plose for sublime views.

Top Tip from SLH

Make time for the great indoors in Brixen too. The buttercup-yellow twin towers of the town’s Cathedral house beautiful Baroque frescoes.
