Things to do
ART & CULTURE
The Netherlands is the birthplace of some of the most famous artists in history – and Amsterdam is the place to see their work. Don’t miss a visit to the Van Gogh Musuem, or the Rijkmuseum for Vermeer and other Dutch masters. Head to Stedelijk Museum for modern art, or stroll the streets to spot outlandish sculptures celebrating Amsterdam’s thriving urban culture.
HISTORY
Amsterdam’s 16th-century Golden Age saw it become the European hub of trade and commerce, famed for its fine cloth. The magnificent Royal Palace dates from this era, along with many fascinating Merchant mansions. A poignant reminder of the city’s more recent past is the Anne Frank House. Or, for a fresh insight into the Amsterdam’s history, visit the vast flower market – a centuries-old industry brought right up to date.
NIGHTLIFE & MUSIC
Amsterdam really comes alive after dark. For music, try the remarkable Music Building on the IJ for jazz, and the Conservatorium for classical concerts. Then there’s the huge choice of buzzing nightclubs, famed throughout Europe. For something a little quieter, there’s plenty of atmospheric bars based in historic buildings and local ‘brown’ cafés, serving craft beers from around the world.
